THE MARGARITA
By Ann Tuennerman of Tales of the Cocktail

It is often the said that the “ticket to admission” into the elite category of fine mixologists is their mastery of the twenty-six classic cocktails, one could make a case for the argument that the in order for a particular bar or club to be elevated to great distinction, the bar team must first master the fine balance of the Classic Margarita, on a consistent basis.

While the Margarita is arguably the most often served cocktail, its prominence among the classics is often minimized, which probably has more to do with the post-prohibition emergence of Tequila on the broader North American market than anything else.  This being said, the somewhat simplistic formula of 100% Blue Agave Tequila, Cointreau and Fresh Squeezed Lime, is a delicate balance of sweet, sour and spicy.

As with all Classic Cocktails, the story behind the Margarita has its variations all of which are equally as enjoyable and provide the appropriate balance of Bartenders and Women.

One of most common versions takes place in 1938 at the Rancho Gloria Bar in Rosarita Beach, Mexico and involves the appropriate cast; a Bartender by the name of Danny Herrera and a damsel in distress, Marjorie King. As the story goes, Marjorie was allergic to all alcohol except for Tequila. In response to her request for a Cocktail, Danny added tequila, triple sec and fresh squeezed lime juice over hand-crushed ice.  Ole’, the Margarita was born.

The other commonly told tale takes place in 1942 where one could find Pancho Morales working behind the bar at Tommy’s Place in Juarez, Mexico.

As the story goes, a woman asked for a Magnolia. Pancho, not remembering the remaining ingredients beyond Cointreu, decided to use Tequila, hence creating the Margarita which by the way, means “daisy” in Spanish.

While there are probably as many other versions to the history as there are recipes for the Margarita, the classic is 2 ounces of Tequila, 1 ounce of Cointreau and one-half ounce of fresh squeezed lime juice.  Since the majority of the stories take place in Mexico, it is more likely that this drink was first prepared with Key Lime Juice as Key Limes are more prevalent south of the border.

Regardless of whether you prefer yours on the rocks, frozen, with or without salt, it behooves you to set out to explore the vast array of well-known haunts and long forgotten hideaways in a quest to discover what makes a perfect Margarita and the story behind it.
