1 1/2 oz. VEEV

1/2 oz. Hibiscus liqueur

1/4 oz. Mezcal

1/2 oz. Fresh lemon juice

1/4 oz. Simple syrup (I use one part clear agave nectar, one part water)

1 oz. Muddled huckleberries and ripped basil

Splash of soda


Middle huckleberries and basil in a mixing pint. Add remaining ingredients and rocks. Shake and pour into a Collins glass; top with splash of soda.

I created this cocktail to replace the long loved mojito-like VEEV cocktail at Candle 79 called the Reforestation (customers can still order it whenever they want, but they are loving the new addition). I took on the project to celebrate VEEV’s partnership with Cuipo. Customers love to know that they are helping to preserve the rainforest when they drink the Tree Hugger, and they love the flavor, too! The mezcal could be seen as a risk, but it’s one I wanted to take to give the cocktail another layer. With VEEV shining through as the primary spirit, this drink is very refreshing and approachable with a hint of a smokey finish. Perfect for a spring barbecue.
