Recipe by Sam Horne

2 oz. VEEV Açaí Spirit

1/2 oz. Lemon Juice

1/2 oz. Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur

1/2 oz. Purple Grenadine (Recipe Follows, or sub. equal parts grenadine and blue curaçao)

1 Dash Lavender Bitters

1 Spray Lemon Bitters

Add all ingredients except lemon bitters, shake vigorously with ice, strain into a chilled coupe, spray the top with lemon bitters, and garnish with a maraschino cherry and a white viola flower.

Purple Grenadine:

1 Cup POM Blueberry Pomegranate Juice

1 Cup Sugar

1/2 Cup Chopped Beet

Heat and stir till sugar disolves, strain, then add

1 Cup Blue Curaçao

Luxardo Maraschino Cherry and a White Viola Flower

The cocktail I’m reinventing is the Aviation. Gin is herbaceous and floral while Veev is more fruity and lightly earthy so I made a few changes.

The original amount of lemon juice was overpowering so it was reduced and a light spray of lemon bitters was added on top for the nose.

I kept the Maraschino liqueur to accent the berry notes and add some depth.

The purple grenadine is not only for color but the beet root adds a little more earthiness to bring out that quality of the açaí. The lighting in the picture makes it look reddish but it’s actually light purple.

Violet is a mild and floral flavor so I changed it to Lavender to further accentuate the earth.

I kept the cherry garnish, and added a viola flower for contrast and as an homage to the violet in the original.

This recipe was concocted in my imagination before sampling any of the ingredients, the Veev, Maraschino, and lavender bitters all had to be special ordered here in Arkansas. Cheers- A Better Way to Drink
